Hagerstown Fire Department - Stations & Apparatus
|
The Hagerstown Fire Department - is a combination fire department consisting of career and volunteer staffing. On the career side, the department is made up of management staff and the international association of firefighters Local 1605. On the volunteer side, the HFD is made up of six volunteer fire companies (First Hose, Antietam, Independent Junior, Western Enterprise, South Hagerstown and Pioneer Hook and Ladder). The department operates five engines, two tiller ladder trucks, a utility chase vehicle and a shift commander out of six stations scattered throughout the corporate limits.
The career staff is divided into three shifts which work a 24/48 work schedule with a Kelly Day. Each shift consists of 23 personnel and is governed by a Battalion Chief who operates as the Battalion Commander. Should the Battalion Chief be off, the Battalion Commander position is filled by either the Relief Captain or the Fire Chief. Each engine is staffed with either one or two career personnel, each truck with two career personnel and the utility chase vehicle with two career personnel. Minimum on-duty staffing for career personnel is 15 not including the Battalion Commander.
The volunteer staff are members of any of the six volunteer companies that make-up the HFD. Each volunteer station is allowed to have a Station Captain and two Lieutenants. The volunteers provide supplemental staffing to the career staff and are an integral part of the HFD.
